Visakha Bucha Day : 4th of June
May 30, 2012
One of the most important days of Buddhists, Visakha Bucha is also declared the most important day of the world by the United Nations. This year, it falls on the 4thof June. Since it is the day when Buddhists worldwide pay homage to the Lord Buddha whose spiritual contribution towards enlightenment is overwhelming and invaluable for all makind, Visakha Bucha is not merely a public holiday. There is more to know about the day as a result. Why is Visakha Bucha so important?Typically falling on a full moon in the 5th or 6th lunar month or otherwise in the 7thmonth in leap years, Visakha Bucha refers to homage paying on a full moon day of the 6th month as the word, ‘Bucha’ literally means to pay homage.Informally called the Buddha’s Birthday, Visakha Bucha is a very important occasion for all Buddhists because it marks the days when the Buddha was born, gained enlightenment and passed away. All of them fall on a full moon day of the 6th monththough years varied. The Lord Bhuddha was born as Prince Sidhatha in the Lumpiniwan Royal Garden between Kabilapas and Thewa Thaha cities in India early in the Friday moring of a full moon in the 6th month 80 years before the Buddhist Era(B.E.)35-year-old Prince Sidhatha, after having ordained for 6 years, gained enlightenment under the Sri Maha Bhodha tree by the Neranchla river in dawn of Wednesday of the 6th month, which was the full moon day as well. At present, the place is calledBuddha Khaya and located in the Phiharn state of India. After he was enlightened, the Lord Buddha disseminated Buddhism by himself and his disciples. He passed away when he was 80 years old in the evening of Tuesday of the 6th month, certainly a full moon day, too. The place where the Lord Buddhapassed away is now in the Kusinakhara city of India.Miracle as it is that the 3 main events occurred on the full moon day of the 6thmonth. As a result, Visakha Bucha is the day that symbolizers the holy triple gem: the Buddha, the Dhama (His teachings) and the Sangha (His disciples), which is believed to brighten the world.History of Visakha Bucha in ThailandLegend has it that Visakha Bucha has existed since the Sukhothai period. It is believed to follow the Lanka’s tradition when King Phatikurach had a grand and exquisite commemoration to the Buddha on the day in B.E. 420. Afterward, other kings of Lanka have maintained this tradition until today.Since Sukhothai and Lanka are connected thanks to many Buddhist monks from Lanka who came here on a religious mission, the monks passed on such tradition to Thailand as well.Nang Noppamas, known among Thais as the Ladies of Songkran, gave some brief details in their book on the ceremony of Visakha Bucha during the Sukhothai period that people from al walks of life everywhere helped each other clean the Sukhothai city before decorating and lightening it with beautiful flowers and lanterns. The event lasted 3 nights and days to commemorate the Lord Buddha. The royal family observed a noble life and, in the evening, walked with lighted candles and joss-sticks in hand around a temple along with vassals. At the same time, local people observed the 5 or 8 precepts proclaimed by the Buddha. They also gave alms to Buddhist monks and made donations to beggars, the disabled, the disadvantages, the orphans or the helpless elder. Some who wished a healthier longer life would release animals like birds, fish or tortoises. In Ayudhaya, Thonburi and the beginning of Rattanakosin periods, Bruhman influenced the belief of Thai people so much that no record on Buddhist-styled Visakha Bucha was made until the reign of King Rama II who kindly asked the Abbot Mee from Wat Ratchaburana Buddhist temple to revive it. So, the ceremony of Visakha Bucha was back in the same way as traditionally organized on the 6th monthof B.E. 2360 until today. What to do on Visakha Bucha Day?On Visakha Bucha Day, devout Buddists decorate their houses and buildings with a national flag or a Buddhist flag. In the evening, they will light lanterns or turn on colorful neon lights. As tradition goes, His Majesty the King and royal family members attend a Buddhist ceremony of offering alms to Buddhist monks in the morning at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In the evening, they will walk around the chapel with lighted joss-sticks and candles in hand before listening to the preaching by Buddhist monks. In Bangkok, the ceremonial Visakha Bucha day is usually big with a lot of Biddhist activities from many governmental and private organizations. Some Buddhists will observe 5 or 8 precepts while others do meditation all day and night to pay homage to the Buddha and cleanse their mind. A very famous place where the big ceremony takes place is Buddha Monthon in the outskirt or Bangkok. Every year, HRH Princess Sirindhorn will do the walking around the big Buddha image with lighted joss-sticks and candles in hand there.Cha-Am, in Particular, celebrates the Visakha Bucha every year at many Buddhist temples, namely Wat Cha-Am Khiri, Wat Neranchararam, Wat NongTapod, Wat NongJaeng, Wat Boh Kaem, Wat Sai Yoi, Wat Maruekhathaiyawan, Wat Huay Sai Tai, and Wat PhoSuwan.Buddhist activities will be held all day and night and devotees are welcome to celebrate and commemorate the day together.Posted by Unknown at 2:50 AM | Labels: 6th month lunar, Buddha, Buddhist, Buucha, Full moon, Joss-sticks, Miracle, The Lord Buddha, Visakha Bucha Day | 0 comments | Email This BlogThis! Hua Hin-Black Mountain Water Park
Feb 1, 2012
Hua Hin’s newest attraction is as much for the tourists as it is for the locals. Black Mountain Water Park is the perfect destination to chill out and cool down while having a blast in the hot, hot sun! Complete with nine different exciting waterslides, a large Wave Pool, an expansive Kid’s Area, a winding and relaxing Lazy River, a large hot tub, several pools scattered about, and as if that weren’t enough to keep you occupied, a massive Wake Board area. There‘s so much to do and so much fun to be had, you ‘re sure to go back again and again.
Black Mountain Water Park is open every day from 10am – 5pm. The grounds are maintained very well and it is quite clear that safety is of the upmost importance. Almost everywhere you turn there’s another water feather to entice you to dip your toes or dunk your head. In addition, there is always a member of the staff’s Life Guard department within sight. The equipment is checked periodically during the day for anything that might be amiss; the park also provides crash-helmets for those guests who are concerned about head-bumps on the slides.
The slides available are sure to please younger guests as well as their parents. From the easy one-story drops to the pitch-black, three-story corkscrew; there’s something for everyone! Even though it’s just a single shot, straight into the water, one of the most enjoyable slides is called the Wide Wave. This is ridden down on an inner tube. While this isn’t anything out of the ordinary, it can be ridden down by up to five guests at a time. It’s a great way to make a big splash and have a wonderful time with family and friends.
If you are ready to take it easy, grab a tube and drop into the lazy river. The easy going current will take you around most of the park. This also makes it easier and more enjoyable when mom goes to find where the little ones have snuck off to. Off to one side of the Water Park, you ‘ll find the kids area. The kids have is also a large, inflatable bouncy room for the kids to jump around in.
Between the kids’ area and the waterslides is the large and every fun Wave Pool. The water begins with a zero – depth, beach –like entrance and gets deeper the farther you go in. You can bring floats and inner tubes, or just jump around in the waves. This is a great place for the whole family as the depth of water can be chosen by how deep you go in.
In the park you ‘ll also find a restaurant to fill those hungry bellies. Unlike many other places where there are limited choices for food, Black Mountain Water Park cooks up some really tasty dishes. They have both Western and Thai menus to choose from as well as yummy ice cream. Located conveniently throughout the park there are also several restroom facilities. There are also full locker room available, complete with private showers and lockers.
Located next door to the Black Mountain Water Park is the humongous Wake Board area. Riders are pulled by a wire –motor system around the large lagoon. Several riders can be on the water at once. There are several jumps and other objects for more advanced riders to use and show –off their stuff. They have several different price structures; from one hour, to day, up to a year. To ride the Wake Board for one hour is just 250 Baht or you can ride the whole day for only 1,000 Baht.

The Meaning of the Royal Ceremonial Emblem
Dec 4, 2011
The meaning of the Royal Ceremonial Emblem in Commemoration of His Majesty the King's 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary, The Fine Arts Department, Ministry of culture, was assigned by the National Commission on the Celebrations to organise a contest on the royal crest marking the 84th birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King.
The judging panel selected three entries that were submitted to His Majesty the King for consideration through the office of His Majesty's Principal Privated Secretary. His Majesty handpicked and refined the design created by Mr. Siri Noodaeng, a university lecturer.
The centre of the Royal Emblem's design depicts the gilt-edged, yellow Royal Cypher set on a dark blue background within a gold circular frame, symbolizing that His Majesty the King is the unifying figure of the Thai people. The Thai number "๙" (9) above the Royal Cypher indicates that His Majesty is the Ninth King of the Royal House of Chakri. The Phra Maha Phichai Mongkut (Great Crown of Victory) signifies the royal dignity of the sovereign. On both sides of the Royal Cypher is a gold "Phoom Khao Bin" decorative design under the Seven -tiered White Umbrella of State. The frame of the Royal Cypher and the ornaments on both sides are encased in green oval band with decorative gold rims. Green is the colour of power for His Majesty's day of birth (Monday) and signifies wealth and fertility, as well as tranquillity. Under the Royal Cypher is an adorned white rabbit jumping forward on a dark blue background embellished with a gold "Kranok" decorative design. The rabbit mark this auspicious year of His Majesty the King's 7th cycle birthday anniversary, and the gold "kranok" symbolizer the prosperity of the Kingdom under His Majesty's benevolent reign. At the base of the Royal Emblem is a strip of gilt-edged pink ribbon bearing the words "The Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2011"

breathtaking views of Hua Hin
Nov 30, 2011
Khao Hin Lek Fai, Hua Hin was made a getaway for the elite by King Rama VII in 1922. Since the construction of Phra Rathchawang Klai Kangwon this quaint fishing village has become a popular holiday destination for many. Affording many attractions the area is now popular amongst the foreigners to Thailand. To take pleasure in the stunning views of this lovely Thai city, the ideal location is the Khao Hin Lek Fai. Also referred to as the Flinstone Hill it is a popular haunt of most who visit the area. Visitors are admitted to the park from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm and anybody can walk in free of charge. The climb to the top is a bit exhausting but the view is rewarding. Small shops inside the park offer refreshments for the climbers.Up on the hill there are six places where you can view the city from. Each offers a panoramic view of the area. Most visitors prefer viewpoints 4 and 5 as they afford spectacular views of the Khao Takiab and Cha Am, which are towards the south and north of the city respectively. For most, locals and foreigners, the park is a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As the area affords clean fresh air and a serene setting it is ideal for those who wish to walk or jog. The road at places could be very steep which makes an even more fitness friendly terrain. The soothing atmosphere of the park is also ideal for those wanting a break from the bustle of the city. There are heaps of little nooks and corners which are ideal for relaxing or pouring over a good book. And even though the park is about two miles from the city, making it a bit too far to walk, visitors can easily hop a local ‘tuk tuk' to get to the destination. Thanks Content by Pushpitha WijesinghePosted by Unknown at 7:02 PM | Labels: Khao Hin Lek Fai | 0 comments | Email This BlogThis! Fair Trade Goods In Hua Hin
Nov 13, 2011
The Family Tree is truly a unique shop, unrivaled in Hua Hin. It is much than 'just another' craft store. Visitors are warmly welcomed to admire beautiful Thai fabric, vibrant painted scences of traditional life, and authentic handicrafts. The Family Tree team will happily share the special and wonderful stories woven into each work of art.
Each item sold at The Family Tree is carefully sourced from local community groups, exceptional independent Thai artisans, or through Thai Craft and their network of producers. All items for sale support fair trade and sustainability. Other efforts by The Family Tree position the shop at the forefront of the Green Movement in Thailand.
The signature product at The Family Tree is a deep, pure black silk, which is made from ebony fruits that are only harvested once a year. The seasonality of this nature dye, combined with the traditional methods in whic it's created, makes it one of Thailand's rarest fabrics.
The Family Tree also offers handmade siver jewelry: including many traditional ethnic designs. Another highlight is gorgeous, oil paintings depicting traditional life and celebrating important Thai festivals. These paintings are produced by a group of over 30 villagers from Ubon Rachathani province, in rural north-eastern Thailand.
One of this author's persona; favorite items will have you taking a closer look. The Family Tree team offers a large assortment of lovly items that are made completely from recycled paper and other re-used materials. The 'paper bead necklaces' are truly amazing. They also have a line of natural cosmetics which will not only help bring out your best, but are also easy on the earth and support a women's cooperative. The Family Tree also regularly organizes hand-on workshops, where guests can learn how to make their own silver and jewelry.
While The Family Tree always tries to feature enviromentally friendly products, they also recognize the reliance of local crafts on wood and the difficulty for village artisans to transform their methods overnight. The Family Tree works to make sure that their carbon footprint remains as neutral as possible. For every 1,000 Baht spent in their store, The Family Tree promises that at least one tree will be planted. And The Family Tree certainly has some experience in this department! This past June, on World Environment Day, they initiated and lead a project to plant trees in Chaiyaphum, Thailand. On that day, more 20,000 trees were planted by more than 700 people!
Be sure to stop in today to visit a true gem of Hua Hin. Their roots may spread across Thailand, but they've chosen to flower here in town.
Getting there: From Bangkok - Hua Hin: turn left on Phetchakasem Rd, Soi 55 (Chomsin road). Fallow this to the beach. For the easiest parking, turn left at the endof the street and park at the Hua Hin pier. Then walk just 2-3 mins along Naresdamri Road (toward the Hilton). You 'll see The Family Tree on the left, across from the Cool Breeze and Swiss Hot Stone restaurants.

Loy Krathong Highlight at Hua Hin
Nov 7, 2011
On the full Moon night of the twenlfth lunar month, November 10. Loy Krathong on Hua Hin Beach is a fun and enjoyable evening with a bustling atmosphere as people gather to float thier krathongs into the sea, which contributes to a memorable evening for all. Sitting on the sand and watching the paper lanterns float to the heavens and out over the gulf, must be one of the most iconic sights in the Thai diary as children play and everyone enjoys a festive night.
'Loy' literally means 'to float,' while 'Krathong' refers to the lotus-shaped receptacle which can float on the water. Originally, the krathong was made of banana leaves or the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant, and in many cases still are. To be truly ecological, check your krathong is made from banana stem by looking underneath before you buy. A krathong contains food, betel nuts, flowers, joss sticks, candle and coins. The Loy Krathong ritual is a simple one.
One needs only to light the candles and joss sticks, make a wish and let it float away with the current of the sea, river or canal.
Different legends surround the origins of Loy Krathong. The most popular version is it was an expresion of gratitude to the goddess of water 'Phra Mae Kongka' for having extensively used, and sometimes polluted, the water from the rivers and canals. It is also in part a thanksgiving for her bounty in providing water for the livelihood of the people.
Some believe the festival originates from Buddhism. They say the offering of flowers, candles and joss-sticks is a tribute of respect to the footprint of the Lord Buddha on the sandy beach of the Narmaha River in India, as well as to the great Serpent and dwellers of the underwater world after the Lord Buddha's visit to thier watery realm. It is possible that this is derived from a Hindu festival that pays tribute to the god Vishnu, who meditates at the center of the ocean.
Others believe that the floral krathong is offered to the pagoda containing the Lord Buddha's topknot, which was cut off at his self-ordination and is now in heaven. Another explanation is that it is a way to pay respect to one's ancestors.
Today, Loy Krathong offers a unique occasion to celebrate and it's a great tme for people to make wishes and look to the future as they float their floral offerings along the waterways.
